25th fuerteventura windsurfing & kiteboarding world cupThe world's best windsurfers and kiters met at the René Egli Center for the 25 Anniversary of Fuerteventura World Cup. The event offered the superlative athletes and spectators 16 days perfect conditions and a spectacle very close to the beach. On the wide sandy beach, there was again an 4000 square meters large tent with a culinary mile and enough place for the Aftersurf Party.
Started with the PWA Windsurfing Slalom Grand Slam at the top of the world provided by the Frenchman Antoine Albeau and living on the Canary Islands Björn Dunkerbeck thrilling race. As in recent years, Fuerte proved to be a top spot for Albeau was able to secure important points with his victory in the battle for the world title.
The PWA Freestyle Grand Slam was the expected spectacle with amazing moves and jumps. Philip Koster, the new German star gave his debut in the freestyle event and showed his potential. The freestyle ended with a stunning final between coming from Bonaire Kiri Thode and the world champion Gollito Perez from Venezuela, which has secured early 2010s also the title of Fuerteventura. surf festival pelzerhaken 2010new location: premiere for pelzerhaken
After 7 years on the Baltic Sea island Fehmarn, this year the traditional surf Festival took place at Pelzerhaken from the 13th to the 16th of May 2010. The new location at the Bay of Lübeck is regarded as the new “surf city“ and known for its perfect preconditions for windsurf beginners and advanced alike. The free testing of the latest surf equipment and the possibility to get precious tips by windsurf pros and experts stood well to the fore. For sure, windsurfing stars like Klaas Voget, Normen Guenzlein and Andre Paskowksi were at place. Our co-operation partner Volkswagen exhibited its surf trip-fit Multivans, Caddys and Retro Bullis.
The event was organized by Europe’s biggest windsurfing magazine “surf” from Germany delivering a huge schedule with autograph sessions, parties and a windsurfing cinema. The highlights of the week were new events like the “surf challenge 2010“, a windsurfing regatta for everyone, and a windsurfing flea market where collectors and bargain hunters got their money’s worth. The Palmolive Kitesurf World cup is one of the biggest events on the PKRA World Tour. I couldn't believe the amount of people there, it was crazy. I have never seen an event as big as this before! The beach at St. Peter Ording is massive, the water state is either flat or wavey and constantly jam packed with kitesurfers! We got wind every day bar one, which was awesome! Especially as the forecast was showing no wind or very little!!
Sunday 24th: I got a 9th overall place in the freestyle. I found the conditions quite hard as it was my switch tack. It was progressively getting windier as the day went on making it perfect for the Big Air/ Board Off competition in the afternoon. I decided to go out very powered on a 10 meter. For a split second I did wonder if I was taking a kite size too big, as I saw the guys coming in from their big air heats on 10 meters! But that thought quickly went! I knew I could hold it down, and you know what they say.... "Go big or go home!" It was a lot of fun to go out way over powered and go massive, dancing around in the sky, and it was even better when I found out I won the women's Big Air/ Board off! I couldn't believe I did it. I was so happy to get my 1st international win on the PKRA World Tour!! :-) I really did not for one minute think I could beat Gisela Pulido from Spain, she is amazing! Or Bruna Kajiya the current World Freestyle Champion. It was an awesome way to end the Palmolive Kitesurf World cup. It was such a fantastic event! I definitely hope to be back at Germany next year!
