Travel Report Naish Surf Week
Raffle winner Jennifer Eschenbach
I´d never thought of winning something, because I was convinced that those games would be simply used for advertising campaigns and if there was a winner it wouldn´t be me. That´s why I had forgotten it all at once after sending the mail – the advantage of all this is that you are delighted the more if you win but you´ll never be disappointed.
Until my dad and me (the second person was included) had checked in at the airport and had got the tickets none of us could really believe or even realize that this prize turned out to become reality. When we got on the plane I couldn´t stop grinning.
The way from the air-conditioned plane across the non air-conditioned airfield to the airport building was a real shock. The wind came up to us like a hairdrier and I immediately thought of surfing. We were taken by taxi to the Robinson Club and arriving there it was like getting into a different world.
Entering the hall we had a straight view along the path of the pergula on the pool. We had a welcome champagne and a grinning on our faces that shouldn´t disappear for the rest of the week. Lars the club manager welcomed us – there they talked to each other only using their first names. Then we had a quick view on the resort and we were shown our rooms when the luggage had already been taken there. The air condition was completely turned on and so we pulled the curtains aside to get a view. It was true we had a view of the sea and we saw the city at the other side of the bay. Apart from all the luxury starting with the room service, the enormous buffets three times a day ( we had no time for a piece of cake in the afternoons), the midnight dinner,a shuttle bus along the promenade and the nice “Robins”(the names of all the employees) of course surfing was my main interest.
Just on the first evening all the participants of “Nash Surf Week ”and their companions were welcomed and the week´s program was presented. We got to know that there mostly was wind in the morning. There we got our first contacts – most of them had already known each other for years and used to meet again and again. We newcomers were warmly welcomed by the group and even after the week I am in touch with most of them. Thanks to Facebook!
Having a cold I couldn´t go surfing the first day. But when I was fit again, Robby had already arrived, a very nice surfer who isn´t conceited at all and a very normal guy. After sleeping only two hours after his flight from Hawaii to Egypt suffering from a big jetlag he was sitting at the surf-station at eight in the morning lively chatting with us. He took it easy when there was only one sail of his material and the rest seemed to be lost on the plane.
I had never been the type of idolizing or adoring somebody only because he was well-known but watching Robby when he was surfing – for him his board seems to be what shoes are for us – I simply had to admit that he was surfing brilliantly. He is able to surf into any direction he wants and to be as quick as he, he sometimes pushed one of us with his board or put his arm on the pole bottom to take one of us with him. I´d never seen that before and I hadn´t thought it could be possible.
All in all I got to know a lot of people there and could get some contacts for my future. Probably I´ll do my education as a surf teacher with Dieter – a surf teacher- at the school of “Wulfener Hals” on Fehmarn. As an alternative I could do it at Hanspeter´s who is the owner of a surf school of Pelzerhaken. With Torsten who is running the watersports station at the Robinson Club Soma Bay I could do a training as a surf teacher and perhaps at Robby`s firm a training at the constructor of sails or at the development for sails.
I want to say thanks to all who made this week possible for me – first to SURF and Chiemsee; because without the competition it would have been impossible to have the chance of surfing with Robby in Egypt. Secondly to all the organizers in the background and of course to Robby himself and all the other participants of Naish Surf Week that are a multi-coloured, cheerful group. I´ve taken all of them in my heart still putting a grinning on my face, if only I think of that unique week.
